Private Universities in Malaysia

Malaysian Universities, generally categorized as Public and Private Universities are a prime source of education in the country. The setting up of Private Universities in Malaysia was made feasible by the passing of the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996. Before that, private higher learning institutions existed but they could not confer degrees of their own, and only acted as a preparatory step for students to take up courses to get themselves ready for externally conferred degrees.

The following list includes some of the major Private Universities in Malaysia:

AIMST University or Universiti AIMST (AIMST) situated at Bedong was founded in 2001. The university is registered with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Malaysia and is a tertiary educational institute under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act of 1996. It offers courses in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Business and Management, Human Resource Development, etc.
Asia e University (AeU), in the country capital Kuala Lumpur, was set up in 2007. It offers Undergraduate courses such as B.ED TESL, BBA Honors, and BBE Honors. The Postgraduate courses offered are MBA (with General or Specialization), M.Ed, and MKM etc.
Penang Medical College (PMC), set up in partnership between the Penang State Government and Irish Medical Colleges of the National University of Ireland (NUI), provides programs in medical fields combining the best of Irish and Malaysian education. Medicine, Surgery and Psychiatry are just some of the departments. Upon graduation, the students are conferred the degrees of both the NUI and PMC.
PETRONAS University of Technology or Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), at Perak was one of the first private universities of the nation set up back in 1995.
Malaysia University of Science and Technology (MUST), located at Selangor is home to the various Honors oriented courses and also offers the chance to complete the Masters degree here.
