Public Universities in MalaysiaMalaysian Universities, generally categorized as Public and Private Universities are a prime source of education in the country. Public Universities are financially dependent on the government of the country but are run as independent universities. The first major universities of the country were established by the Acts of Parliament, in two separate batches. Alongside these educational centers, the other Public Universities in the country of Malaysia were established by order as per the provisions of the Universities and University Colleges Act of 1971. The following list includes some of the major Public Universities in Malaysia: - University of Technology or Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) located at Johor is the country’s oldest and largest engineering-based university and offers the most viable Postgraduate and Undergraduate educational programs in the different fields of engineering such as Civil Engineering, Bioscience and Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, as well as courses in Management and Human Rights Development and Education.
- Northern University, Malaysia or Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) located at Kedah. Its chief objective is to provide academic excellence in fields such as Information Technology, Management and Education. Since its establishment, the university has been able to carve out a niche for itself in the courses of Economics, Tourism Management, Social Development and Human Resource Development. The University consists of 15 residential colleges which can accommodate around 20,000 students.
- Science University, Malaysia or Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) is a premier institution for the science related courses. The journey began way back in 1969 in the fields of Natural Sciences through the School of Physics and Mathematics, the School of Chemical Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences. The chief campus of USM is located at Minden, which is around 10 kilometers from the city of Georgetown. Two branch campuses were set up when the university expanded which include the Health Campus at Kelantan, which houses the University’s Teaching Hospital for the Medical, Dental and Health Science programs. The six engineering schools are housed at the Engineering Campus located at Sen Ampangan, Penang. At present, the pillars of USM are the 24 schools, 13 research centers, 6 units, 2 institutes and lastly, 1 teaching hospital.
