Science University of Malaysia – A Student’s Dream and a Researcher’s Vision
The Science University of Malaysia (or Universiti Sains Malaysia, commonly referred to as USM) is one of the leading institutions for science courses. It was established in 1969 teaching Natural Sciences through the School of Physics and Mathematics, the School of Chemical Sciences and the School of Biological Sciences. The campus head of USM is situated at Minden, which is around 10km from Georgetown. Two more campuses were created when the university was extended which included the Health Campus at Kelantan and the Engineering Campus situated in Sen Ampangan, Penang.
USM has always adopted an innovative and unique approach in its viewing of higher education and its departure from the age old, traditional system of teaching is of significance. The broad-based school system is implemented by the USM, which groups related subjects into schools of study, and each school combines subjects and courses which are organized in a manner which makes it possible to get a degree specialization in a chosen subject.
USM provides Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses that are taught by the various schools under its wing. The study programs, hence, are in the fields of Applied Science, Arts and Technology. In the fields of research, USM places emphasis on the researches that are result-oriented and gives attention on areas that incorporate academic concern and practical significance. Steps have also been taken by the University to periodically assess research areas that are deserving of special attention. It is a recognized ‘Research University’ providing an international standard facility, through its learning environment and its highly skilled academicians.
