Technological University of Malaysia – Creating Engineers of and for Tomorrow
The Technological University of Malaysia (also known as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, commonly referred to as UTM), is the country’s biggest engineering-based university which provides Postgraduate and Undergraduate educational programs in different fields of engineering such as Civil Engineering, Bioscience and Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and courses in Management and Human Rights Development and Education.
The university collaborates with a number of international universities and presently offers 108 programs in Postgraduate courses. Around 25% of its total number of 20,000 students are postgraduates and as such, forms the principal supply line of the country’s graduate engineers and professionals. Most of the emerging sectors of the country related to engineering and technology have had the active backing of the UTM alumni as many graduates of UTM have left their mark in many academic and professional institutions all over the world. Its strong base of international students and faculty members provides all the required international experience and exposure to students. It co-operates with different universities from home and abroad for research and development, exchange programs for staff and students.
Alongside all these fields, it also provides part-time educational programs through its School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE). Courses are also offered for professionals who seek an improvement of comprehension and skills through the International Business School (IBS) and Business and Advanced Technology Centre (BATC).
The main campus of the university is at Skudai, which is about 20km north of Johor Bahru and is relatively close to the airport at Senai. The second or branch campus is in Kuala Lumpur, and houses the diploma students. For the Undergraduate students, it is imperative that they stay in residential colleges. By the current Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, it is among the top 10 universities in south-east Asia and endeavors to be a world class university by the end of 2010.
